Ag lab once again targeted for closure by Trump budget – News – Journal Star

PEORIA — An iconic institution that has played a significant role in Peoria’s history and recently brought together officials from across the political spectrum to avert its closure has once again been targeted for closure by the Trump administration.

The National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research — the gargantuan facility on University Street just north of the interstate, which is perhaps better known as the ag lab — will close under the Trump administration’s latest budget.

A federal spending proposal last year also called for its closure, but a bipartisan outcry restored funding for the facility, which employs about 200 people, scores of them highly educated scientists.
