The Westminster jungle can seem a rude and barbaric place but for all the hullabaloo in the chamber, political debate is almost excessively civil.

Such tame terms as guttersnipe, hooligan, stool pigeon and git have all been ruled out of order. Just the other day a Scottish Nationalist was ordered to withdraw the word “hypocrite”, while Dennis Skinner was thrown out a couple of years ago for refusing to retract “dodgy”.

Yet the air in Westminster Hall turned blue yesterday afternoon as MPs read out the contents of their electronic postbags. In a debate about the abuse of politicians and their staff, there was so much swearing Hansard must have run out of asterisks. It was all f this and f that and more uses…
