An open letter from some members of UF IFAS departments | Opinion

In light of a white supremacist rally at UF, the undersigned members of the UF Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, and the UF School of Forest Resources and Conservation emphatically state that we personally abhor the rally participants’ messages of hate, extremism and white supremacy. We believe ideas of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and indeed any denigration of a person as the other and not deserving of equality and respect has no place in our society. We believe our strength as an academic community and city is in our diversity and acceptance of people from different cultures and backgrounds.

It is not enough to not be racist — we must be anti-racist. This means not being racist is not enough. As members of an educational institution that values diversity, we are compelled to speak out.

We fully affirm UF’s non-discrimination policy that says, “The University is committed to non-discrimination with respect to race, creed, color, religion, age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, national origin, political opinions or affiliations, genetic information and veteran status as protected under the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act.” Our strength as an academic community and city is in our diversity and acceptance of people from different cultures, societies and backgrounds.

Through this letter, we — as individuals — express our full support of organizations and people who engage in peaceful efforts to help combat bigotry, racism and intolerance. We reject everything white supremacy stands for and instead stand in resolute solidarity with students, staff, faculty and citizens most affected by hateful ideology which has no place in our society.
