More than 40 members of Congress have co-sponsored a bill for a constitutional amendment to limit money in elections and lobbying. The “We The People” amendment seeks to define “person” as human, removing political speech privileges and financial support from constructed organizations such as corporations.
The amendment also states that money is not a form of speech. It places upon Congress, legislatures and local governmental units the responsibility to assure financial contributions do not outweigh citizen participation in elections, a release stated. Reasonable limitations could then be placed on contributions by any individual.
Move To Amend is not tied to any political party. Republicans, Democrats and independents are all invited to attend Tuesday’s meeting.
