Political satire group comes to Madison’s Capitol Theater

MADISON, Wis. – The Capitol Steps, a political satire group, will perform at the Overture’s Capitol Theater on Sunday, July 7.

Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday at 11 a.m., with the lowest ticket prices beginning at $29.50.

The group that claims to put the “mock” in democracy began over 30 years ago when a group of Senate staffers banded together to satirize the people and places that employed them.

While not all of the current members of the Capitol Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, collectively, the group has worked in a total of 18 congressional offices and represents 62 years of House and Senate staff experience.

The group is based in Washington, D.C., and its cast members have worked for all sides of the political spectrum.

“Typically, the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up, and the Republicans party. That’s what we call the two-party system,” founding Capitol Steps member Elaina Newport said.

The group has performed for the last five presidents and started when Ronald Reagan was in office.

The event will begin at 8 p.m., and the door will open at 7 p.m.

Tickets can be bought online at overture.org, by phone at 608-258-4141 or in person at the Overture Center box office.
