Pride weekend kicks off at California Capitol with political rally

Heated issues over equality were discussed outside the California Capitol, where rainbow flags symbolizing Pride month flew in Sacramento.

During Friday’s rally, political candidates who support the LGBT community, like gubernatorial candidate, Delaine Eastin, were showcased and spoke.

“We will not stop until these rights are no longer threatened,” Eastin said.

The rally is a bridge to Saturday’s Pride march.

“It tells our community that we can come forward and who we need to stand behind,” California LGBT caucus member Jacalyn Smith said.

Dozens of people rallied at the California Capitol on Friday, June 2, 2017, to highlight political candidates that support the LGBTQ community.

Demonstrators also urged people to resist President Donald Trump’s administration and policies. The group continued to call for inclusion, fairness and justice.

“What happens is if they’re not seen, then people feel comfortable discriminating against people,” Stonewall Democratic Club member Rosanna Herber said.

Political commentator, and president of SaveCalifornia.com, Randy Thomasson said the rally was incongruous.

“It’s ironic how the LGBTIQ agenda claims to be ‘victims’ in need of more ‘rights,'” he said. “When in reality, they’re wiping out other people’s religious freedom, free speech, parental rights, and property rights.”

However, LGBTQ supporters said the message is to be kind and urge the world to see them as no different as anyone else.

“We pay our taxes, we love our children, we help out in the community and we deserve to have equal rights,” Herber said.

The Pride weekend celebrations continue Saturday:

Expect road closures in the area.
