Senators question bilingualism commissioner nominee’s independence from PMO

Senators spanning Canada’s political spectrum expressed doubt Monday evening that Madeleine Meilleur can serve as official languages commissioner without letting her deep Liberal roots get in the way.

While discussion in the red chamber over the Trudeau government’s controversial nominee didn’t provoke anywhere near the same levels of outrage as it has in the House of Commons over the past two weeks, both Conservative and independent senators subjected Meilleur – a former Liberal Ontario MPP and cabinet minister – to often pointed questions about her ties to the Liberal government, as well as the optics of her appointment.

Meilleur, a long-time Liberal party member
